A fine quality 19th century treen string or thread box in the form of a barrel raised on a plinth. The barrel is turned from specially selected figured wood of lovely warm colour with distinctive black streaks (possibly walnut) and is ornamented by four contrasting brass bands. One end unscrews to accept the thread which is fed out through the spout at the other end complete with its original cutter. An excellent, practical example in full working order. Circa 1860.
