A particulary fine, early 19th century solid silver vinaigrette by the highly regarded Birmingham silversmith, Joseph Willmore.  The box, with hinged silver lid, is decorated with attractive wriggle-work engraving whilst the underside in engraved with a floral motif.  The interior retains its original gilding and is complete with its decorative hinged grille of gilded filigree.  The piece is hallmarked Birmingham, 1822.

Joseph Willmore was born in 1790 in Birmingham and apprenticed as a silversmith, to his grandfather Thomas Willmore. He entered his first silversmith's mark in 1808, aged 18. He became extremely successful and opened a showroom in London, on Bouverie Street, to allow him access to the London market.
