A decorative early 18th century, Edo period, Arita Imari bowl. The interior comprises contrasting panels of iron red and cobalt blue with floral motifs and gilded highlights centred by a roundel depicting a scholar riding a Koi carp. Japanese. Circa 1730.
‘Koi’ means ‘Carp’ in Japanese and this fish is a symbol of perseverance due to the fish’s tendency to swim upstream and resist the flow of water. Koi Carp also symbolise faithfulness and marriage in Japan.
