Of fine quality and imposing presence, a Regency period tea caddy of sarcophagus form in mahogany of lovely figure and colour with a warm patina.  The lid opens on a stop hinge to reveal a ruched green velvet lining and the two lidded compartments for green and black tea which retain traces of the original zinc lining paper.  The lids are fitted with their original turned bone finials matching the escutcheon to the front of the piece.  The tea compartments flank a heavy quality Regency cut glass bowl*, either for sugar or mixing the two varieties of tea.  The caddy is raised on the original four bun feet and, underlining the quality of the piece, each leading edge is inlaid with  boxwood.  Circa 1820-30.

* The glass bowl is probably a replacement but it fits beautifully and is of contemporaneous date.
